Bury St Edmunds

Bury St Edmunds has grown from a small Anglo- Saxon settlement known as Beodricksworth to a modern bustling town, but somehow has managed to retain its much of its Georgian character.

Within the centre of the town is our magnificent Cathedral. The streets adjacent to the Cathedral are laid out in a grid system that was designed by Baldwin (Abbot 1065 -97). It can be claimed that Baldwin was one of the country's very first town planners.

Nathaniel Hodson established the present Abbey Gardens in 1831 and was modelled on the Royal Botanic Gardens in Brussels.

The Gardens are much loved by the residents and the thousands of visitors who regularly visit the town.

 

 

Our Group

The Bury St Edmunds Group has had meetings most months of the year since relaunch in June 2024 and the programme for the coming year is being developed. Please check the Events tab.

Monthly evening meetings are generally held on the last Thursday of each month starting at 7pm with presentations on family history related subjects, with a focus where possible on Bury St. Edmunds and the surrounding area.

  • February 2026 Meeting

    25th Feb 2026

    There will be no meeting of the Bury Group on Thursday 26th February.  On this evening, however, there is a talk by Dr Pat Murrell at the United Reformed Church in Whiting Street, Bury St. Edmunds, entitled "Rumour, Scandal and Gossip - what made tongues wag in Georgian Bury St Edmunds." at 8pm.  Tickets are £10 in aid of St. Nicolas Hospice.  Available from the St. Nicolas Hospice charity shop on St. Johns Street, Bury St. Edmunds.

  • 2026 Update re Bury St Edmunds Group

    9th Jun 2024

    The Bury St Edmunds group closed down in May 2023, but that turned out to be temporary and we held a relaunch event in June 2024 which was well attended.

    The group is currently hibernating for winter, but will start its program again in late February 2026 - please check the EVENTS tab.

    All meetings held at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Symonds Road, Bury St Edmunds IP32 7DZ. Plenty of free parking.
