Winifred Challis, Morals, Marriage & Mass Observation in WW2

Posted by on 6th Apr 2024

We welcome back Terry O'Donoghue who will present ‘Winifred Challis, Morals, Marriage & Mass Observation in WW2’.

Using Winifred’s sharp comments as a backdrop, the social attitudes and tensions within Suffolk during WW2 are considered. Social issues include inter racial tension within the American forces, the so called ‘Brown Babies’ and also how the county dealt with the influx of itinerant workers building the airfields and of course, Winifred’s views on the morals of Suffolk girls! Winifred’s work with the Public Assistance Board did bring her over to Haverhill so hopefully we might hear about this as well.

Thursday the 11th April at 7.30pm in the Haverhill Old Independent Church Hall.
